Who looked at your file

Why does credit repair in Virginia Beach often start with inquiries?

Because improper use of a report is a big share of what Virginians complain about. In 2025 the CFPB logged 87,364 credit reporting complaints from Virginia, and 21,757 of them were about improper use: a report pulled without a valid reason, or an account opened by someone else. That is a quarter of the total. We take Virginia Beach calls at 832-344-9402; there is no office here.

The CFPB does not confirm complaints before publishing them. Even so, the pattern is a useful reminder. An inquiry from a lender you never contacted can be the first visible trace of someone using your identity, and it is easy to overlook among the accounts you do know.

Our order of work

What we check first on a Virginia Beach report

  1. Hard inquiries. Each one matched to an application you actually made.
  2. Accounts you do not recognize. New cards, loans or utility accounts that are not yours.
  3. Addresses and names on file. Unfamiliar ones can point to mixed files or misuse.
  4. Collections. Original creditor, amount and first-delinquency date, against your own records.
  5. Accounts you closed. Whether they report as closed, and at the right balance.

Example: a homeowner sees two auto lender inquiries from a month when they never shopped for a car, and a store card they never applied for. The inquiries and the card would be disputed together as unauthorized, with a note about possible identity theft. This scenario is invented; each bureau and creditor reaches its own conclusion.

The city in numbers

What does the Census say about Virginia Beach households?

It is a comfortable, owner-heavy city with expensive rentals. Most homes are owner-occupied, the median household earns $92,968, and the poverty rate is 8.6%. Yet the median rent of $1,714 means more than half of renters spend 30% or more of income on housing. For those renters, a landlord's credit screening can decide where they live next.

Counseling or disputes

Credit counseling or credit repair: which does Virginia Beach need?

The report decides. Counseling deals with real debt: a budget, and sometimes a plan that repays creditors over time. Disputes deal with wrong information. A person whose report is accurate but heavy with balances gets little from a dispute. A person with an unauthorized account gets little from a budget. We tell you which one your file points to, even when the answer is not us.

Our article on why credit counseling matters explains what a counselor does, and our credit education pages cover how disputes, reporting periods and inquiries work.

Our boundaries

What we will not do

We will not tell you to report identity theft for an account you opened and forgot about. We will not dispute accurate history, and we will not offer a substitute credit number or any so-called fresh start. We will not ask for payment before the work is performed, which the law bars, and we will not claim a dispute will succeed.

Everything starts with rights you already hold. You may dispute directly with a bureau for free, and the bureau must reinvestigate and correct or delete inaccurate or incomplete information. You may cancel any credit repair contract within three business days. Read more on federal credit rights you can use yourself.

FAQ

Virginia Beach credit questions

Can people in Norfolk or Chesapeake use your service?

Yes. We work by phone, so Norfolk, Chesapeake and the rest of Hampton Roads are served the same way as Virginia Beach. You call, we review your three reports together, and disputes go out in writing if you decide to proceed. The Census figures on this page describe Virginia Beach only, so your own city's numbers may differ.

What is a credit score specialist, and is that what you are?

That phrase is a marketing label, not a credential, and we do not use it. What we do is narrower: we read your reports, explain each account, and dispute entries that appear inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable. We do not claim to set or change a score, because scoring models use whatever accurate data the bureaus hold.

How can I tell whether an inquiry on my report is legitimate?

Match each hard inquiry to an application you remember making: a card, a car, an apartment, a phone plan. Note the date and the company name, since lenders sometimes appear under a parent or partner name. An inquiry you cannot connect to anything is worth asking about, and if it comes with a new account you did not open, treat it as possible identity theft.

What should I do if I find an account I never opened?

Do not wait. Contact the bureau that shows it and the company that opened it, and gather anything that proves it is not yours. A dispute asks the bureau to investigate, generally within 30 days. If it looks like identity theft, a real report to the FTC is appropriate. Never file one for an account that is actually yours.

Is credit counseling better than credit repair for me?

It depends on what your report shows. If the problem is real debt you are struggling to pay, a nonprofit counseling agency can help with a budget and sometimes a repayment plan. If the problem is wrong information, counseling will not fix it; a dispute will. Many people in Virginia Beach call us unsure, and sorting that out is the first thing we do.

Will high rent payments show up on my credit report?

Rent you pay on time often does not appear unless your landlord or a service reports it. What can appear is a rental debt sent to collections, sometimes after a move-out dispute. We check that any such entry matches your lease and move-out records, and whether the amount and dates are right, before deciding whether to challenge it.

Start with what is actually on your reports

The first conversation is free. We sort each account into possibly wrong, possibly unverifiable and accurate, and explain your options, including the free ones.

Not sure what your credit reports say?

A consultation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We read the reports with you, point out entries that look wrong or unverifiable, and tell you which steps you can take on your own.
