Memphis by phone

How does credit repair in Memphis work with Credit Professional Services?

It works over the phone. You call 901-472-3386, we set a time, and we read your three reports together while you have them open. Nothing happens in person. The first conversation is free and carries no obligation. If you decide to go further, the agreement comes to you in writing, never as a yes on a call.

Most Memphis callers already know their number is low. What they rarely know is which entries are pulling it down and whether those entries are even reported correctly. That gap is where a review earns its time.

The Memphis numbers

Why do collections show up so often on Memphis credit reports?

Income pressure leads to missed bills, and missed bills become collections. The Census figures for Memphis point in that direction. Unemployment was 8.3%, and 23.1% of residents lived below the poverty line. Among renters, 55.7% paid 30% or more of their income on rent. A single gap between paychecks can push a phone bill, a medical copay or a final utility bill to an agency.

None of that means a collection is wrong. It means there are many of them to check, and agencies that buy old accounts in bulk do not always carry the dates and balances over cleanly.

Our checklist

What we check first on a Memphis collection account

Collections get the closest reading because small reporting mistakes on them are common and easy to miss. These are the questions we work through, in order:

  1. Is it the same debt listed twice? An original creditor and a collector can both report one bill. Only one should show a balance owed.
  2. Does the date of first delinquency match across bureaus? That date sets the seven-year clock, which begins 180 days after the missed payment that led to collection.
  3. Is the balance current? A paid or settled account that still shows money owed is incomplete reporting.
  4. Do you recognize the account at all? An unknown collector can mean a mixed file or identity theft, and each calls for a different letter.

Example: A caller has a $640 utility collection on Experian and TransUnion, but Equifax shows the same account at $910 with a later delinquency date. The higher balance and the shifted date are the parts to question. The debt itself may be valid; the way one bureau reports it may not be. This is a hypothetical, and no outcome is promised.

Jobs and credit

Who else is looking at a Memphis credit report?

More people than most callers expect. Landlords, lenders, insurers and some employers all ask to see it. With 8.3% of the Memphis labor force out of work, many callers are applying for jobs and apartments in the same month, and each application can leave a trace. We read the inquiry section as carefully as the accounts, because an entry you never authorized is worth asking about.

Tennessee consumers sent the CFPB 69,587 credit reporting complaints in 2025. The most frequent issue was incorrect information on a report, cited 40,725 times; improper use of a report followed at 15,536. The CFPB publishes these complaints but does not verify them, so treat the totals as a measure of how often people raise the problem, not proof of fault.

Buying later

Can a Memphis renter build a file strong enough to buy a home?

Many can, given time and an accurate report. The median home value in Memphis was $169,000, lower than in many large cities, while the median gross rent was $1,181 a month. For some renters, owning costs less each month than renting. The lender's question is whether the report shows recent on-time payments and no errors that make the risk look worse than it is.

A credit file is built by open accounts paid as agreed over months, not by any letter we send. Our part is to correct what is reported wrongly and to explain, in plain words, how payment history, balances and account age affect a score. Your part is the payment record from here on.

Plain limits

What we will not do for a Memphis client

We will not challenge a collection you have told us is yours and correct, and we will not tell you to stop talking to the bureaus. We will not suggest a made-up identity theft report or any shortcut that puts you at legal risk. We will not charge for work before it is done, as federal law requires. You can cancel any agreement within 3 business days of signing it.

The Federal Trade Commission says anything a credit repair company can do legally, you can do for yourself for little or no cost. Disputing mistakes is free. Our summary of your rights under federal law lists each step, and how our credit repair process works shows where we fit if you would rather not write the letters yourself.

Callers from farther east can also read about credit repair in Nashville, 193 miles away, or credit repair in Louisville, about 319 miles north. All of our cities are on the locations page.

Memphis questions

Questions Memphis callers ask about credit restoration

Is a credit restoration company in Memphis different from a credit repair company?

The two phrases describe the same kind of service. Both review your reports and challenge entries that seem wrong. Neither name gives a company extra power: federal law lets no one take accurate, current and verifiable information off a report, and you can dispute errors with each bureau yourself at no cost.

What if a Memphis credit report shows inquiries I never authorized?

Improper use of a report was the second most common credit reporting complaint Tennessee residents sent the CFPB in 2025. During a review we list every hard inquiry by date and company. Any you do not recognize can be questioned with the company that made it, and a pattern of unknown ones can be an early sign of identity theft.

How long can an old Memphis medical or utility collection stay on my report?

A collection account can be reported for seven years. Under federal law that period begins 180 days after the start of the delinquency that came before the collection, not on the day an agency bought or listed it. We compare the dates each bureau lists, because a collection that reports past that window is obsolete and can be disputed.

What does a credit specialist actually do on a first call?

On our first call we ask what you want the credit for, such as an apartment, a car or a job. Then we go through each bureau's report with you and sort every account into three groups: possibly wrong, possibly unverifiable, and accurate. The call costs nothing, and you are not enrolled in anything by phone.

Will paying a collection make it disappear from my report?

Paying a collection changes its status to paid. It does not, by itself, take the account off the report, because a paid debt that was once late is still accurate history. What can be corrected is a wrong balance, a wrong date or a duplicate listing of the same debt.

Do I have to live in a certain Memphis ZIP code to work with you?

No. We handle every consultation by phone, so callers from 38016 to 38134 and anywhere else in the city get the same review. Have your three reports open while we talk. You can download them free once a week from each bureau.
