Why does credit repair in Boston so often begin with an apartment application?
Because most Boston households rent, and a rental application is often the first place a bad entry costs you something. About 64.3% of occupied homes in the city are renter-occupied. The median gross rent is $2,147, and 51.2% of renters put 30% or more of their income toward it. Property managers with that much demand can be picky, and screening reports are part of how they choose.

What would a property manager notice first?
Usually collections from past rentals and utilities, recent late payments, and anything that looks like an unpaid judgment. So that is where we look first when a Boston renter calls.
- Collections tied to a former landlord or utility, checked against your move-out paperwork and final bill.
- The date of first delinquency on each collection, since the seven-year limit runs from 180 days after that date.
- Accounts listed twice after a debt was sold.
- Addresses on the report that you never lived at, which can signal a mixed file.
- Recent inquiries from screening companies you did not authorize.
Example: a tenant leaves an apartment with a signed walk-through showing no damage, yet a damage balance turns up as a collection months later. The walk-through form is the document a dispute would lean on. This is illustration only, not a forecast of what a bureau would decide.
Do student loans complicate a Boston credit file?
They can, mainly through servicing changes rather than the loans themselves. More than half of Boston adults 25 and older, 54.9%, hold a bachelor's degree or higher, so education debt is common on the files we see. When a loan moves from one servicer to another, the old account should show as transferred with no balance, and the new one should carry the history forward cleanly.
Problems we look for are a balance reported under both servicers, or a late mark in the month of the handoff when your payment records show it went through. A loan that was simply paid late, and reported that way, is accurate and stays.
How should you compare credit repair companies in Boston?
Compare them on what they put in writing, not on what they promise. The FTC warns that scammers insist on payment before they help you, tell you not to contact the bureaus, and push you to dispute information you know is accurate. A company that follows the law gives you a written contract, a separate statement of your rights, and a three-day right to cancel.
The do-it-yourself path is also open. Disputing mistakes on your report is free, and you can see each of your reports once a week at no charge. Our pages on your federal rights and on how to judge a credit repair company go further.
What we will not do. We will not tell a Boston renter to leave a known debt off a rental application, file a dispute against an account you confirm is right, or describe the work as making a file spotless. If a screening problem is accurate, we will tell you that plainly and talk about what history you can build from here.
What do Massachusetts complaint numbers show?
Errors are the main complaint statewide too. In 2025 the CFPB received 57,406 credit reporting complaints and 2,510 debt collection complaints from Massachusetts consumers. Incorrect information on a report accounted for 35,987 of the reporting complaints. These are what consumers alleged; the CFPB does not verify them.

Common questions from Boston renters and borrowers
Does a Boston landlord see the same report a lender sees?
Not always. A landlord may use a tenant screening company that buys data from one or more credit bureaus, so the version in front of them can come from a single bureau. That is one reason we review all three files. A mistake that sits on only one of them can still be the one a property manager reads.
Can I fix my credit score in Boston before my lease renewal?
You can correct errors, but nobody can promise a timeline that matches a renewal date. A bureau generally has 30 days to investigate a dispute after receiving it. If your renewal or a new application is close, start by pulling your free reports this week and flag anything wrong right away, with copies of your proof.
Is credit restoration different from credit repair?
It is mostly a different name for the same idea. Whatever a company calls it, the law is the same: accurate, current and verifiable information stays on your report, and only inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable items can be corrected or deleted. Be wary of anyone who describes restoration as wiping a file clean.
How do I choose among credit repair companies in Massachusetts?
Ask how they get paid and when. Federal law bars a credit repair organization from taking money for a service before that service is fully performed. Ask for the written statement of your rights, which must be separate from the contract, and confirm the three-business-day cancellation right. The FTC lists warning signs worth reading too.
Will student loans on my Boston credit report be disputed?
Only if something about them is reported wrong. A student loan with correct balances and payment history is accurate information and stays. We do check servicer transfers carefully, because a loan moved between servicers can show up twice or carry a late mark from the changeover month that your records do not support.
Do you meet Boston clients in person?
No. Credit Professional Services has no office in Boston, so every consultation and follow-up happens by phone. You send copies of your documents, we read the reports together on a call, and if you later sign up we explain each bureau response the same way. The first call is free and does not enroll you in anything.
Start with what is actually on your reports
The first conversation is free. We sort each account into possibly wrong, possibly unverifiable and accurate, and explain your options, including the free ones.
Not sure what your credit reports say?
A consultation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We read the reports with you, point out entries that look wrong or unverifiable, and tell you which steps you can take on your own.
